The Sauk Prairie community is proud to announce the groundbreaking of Prairie Fields, an innovative housing development that will bring high-quality, affordable living options to the heart of the region. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the corner of Sauk Prairie Road and 21st Street, across from Culver Community Park in Prairie du Sac.

The Sauk Prairie School District , the Village of Prairie du Sac, and the Sauk Prairie Area Chamber of Commerce came together to find creative, long-term solutions to support workers, businesses, and families across the Sauk Prairie area. This groundbreaking marks a major milestone in a years-long, community-driven effort to address the region’s housing crisis through collaboration, innovation, and determination.

Prairie Fields will feature:

• 118 Workforce Housing Apartments
• Up to 88 owner-occupied condominiums
• Future development sites for a childcare center and senior living apartments

The development is the result of a public-private partnership with Prairie Fields LLC of Madison, whose team responded enthusiastically to the region’s call for support.

Recognizing the urgency of the housing shortage, the Sauk Prairie School District made a bold move by selling 40 acres of land with stipulations that guarantee affordable rent control for the next ten years and reserve two units for school district use.

“We came to the table because we need stable housing for our workforce, our students, and their families,” said Superintendent Jeff Wright.

As early as 2019, community leaders began studying the deep impacts of housing shortages on economic growth and workforce stability. Vacancy rates were near zero, rent costs far exceeded state averages, and families faced waitlists of five months or longer. While market conditions remain challenging, local leadership is proving that creative thinking and collaboration can deliver real progress.

“The economic benefits of workforce housing are clear,” said Alan Wildman, Village Administrator of Prairie du Sac. “This development helps area businesses attract and retain employees, brings new commerce, and contributes to job creation and tax base growth.”

The Prairie Fields development is more than just housing—it is a symbol of what communities can achieve when schools, municipalities, and private developers work hand in hand. By embracing a developer-friendly and mission-driven approach, Sauk Prairie is laying the foundation for a more sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant future.
