The purpose of the Environmental Health Sanitarian is to apply the environmental measures to prevent disease and protect human health and safety.

 

Essential Duties

 

  • Complete inspections relating to contracts with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) such as Hotel/Motels, Campgrounds, Restaurants, School Lunch Programs, Retail Food Establishments, Tattoo/Body Art Establishments, and Transient Non-community Wells.

 

  • Effectively document and track inspections using the HealthSpace system.

 

  • Investigates environmental health complaints and determines health hazard risk.

 

  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures used by environmental health staff.

 

  • Respond to complaints from public regarding foodborne illness. Coordinate with others for investigation of foodborne illnesses.

 

  • Compile and maintain program data; analyze data; and make recommendations regarding program efficiency and effectiveness.

 

  • Provide education and outreach for radon, mold and air/water quality.

 

  • Conduct environmental investigations of lead and health hazards.

 

  • Conduct site visits and collect water samples for non-community wells within Sauk County.

 

  • Provide educational opportunities and outreach to citizens of the county as well as the operators of licensed establishments.

 

  • Participate in population heath initiatives.

 

  • Prepare required reports to the Department of Health Services and other agencies.

 

  • Enforce statues, ordinances, codes, regulations, policies, and standards of environmental health and safety.

 

  • Perform environmental sampling or testing.

 

  • Advocate for changes to or the development of ordinances and rules to assure adequate environmental protections for County residents.

 

  • Coordinate county environmental health programs with various county and state agencies to provide services.

 

  • Coordinate environmental staff meetings.

 

  • And other duties as assigned.

Required Working Hours

Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm.  Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required. Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

 

Minimum Training and Education

 

Required:                      

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Biology, Microbiology, or another related field

 

Licenses/Certifications: 

Valid Wisconsin State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian or ability to become certified within 6 months of hire

 

Preferred:                     

2 years of inspection experience

                                     

Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
