POSITION SPECIFICS
Title: Advanced Practice Provider – Plastics (Full Time)
FTE:  1.0 FTE (40 hours/week)
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
Holiday Rotation: N/A

POSITION SUMMARY
Assists physicians in all aspects of patient care, including examining patients, performing complex history and physicals, compiling medical data, administering or ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting test results.  Performs therapeutic duties such as injections, wound care, and managing infection.
 
POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as a first assistant to the primary surgeon to include deep and superficial closures, assistance with positioning of surgical patients, application of appliances and other actions delegated by the surgeon and as credentialed through the Medical Staff privileging process. 
  • Perform advanced suturing skills, such as for multi-layered closures (i.e. deep dermals, running subcuticular).
  • Retract, dissect, manipulate tissues, insert drains and perform closure of surgical incision(s). 
  • Assist in performing simple clinic procedures, i.e. suturing, incision and drainage, removal of skin lesions and foreign bodies. 
  • Independently perform appropriate dressing changes, suture and drain removal, and treatment of wounds in clinic visits.   
  • Perform comprehensive and problem-focused history and physical assessments (including pre-operative H&Ps) of patients that are accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate for age, gender and clinical problem.
  • Counsel and educate patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, surgical recovery and complications prevention.
  • Prepare patients for key components of surgery.
  • Independently triage patient messages/calls and concerns, with elevation to attending physician when appropriate.
  • Screen patients to determine their need for medical attention.
  • Assess, evaluate and treat (within scope), patients appearing for treatment on an emergency basis.
  • Perform daily rounds on inpatients.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies and correctly interpret the results.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and alter the plan of care as needed.
  • Manage medical and surgical conditions based on knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record in a manner acceptable to the attending physician and the Health Information Management department. 
  • Keep daily progress notes on inpatients.
  • Discharge patients and dictate discharge summaries. 
  • Complete timely and accurate clinic consultation and progress notes, including examination outcomes, referral physician letters and other records.  Ensure that attending physician verifies the final diagnosis and the examination outcome documentation. 
  • Order, prescribe and administer medications, as allowed under Wisconsin law. 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education:
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program with Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) or equivalent or Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited program (Nurse Practitioner specialization)
  • Preferred: None
Experience:
  • Required: 1-3 years of clinical experience
  • Preferred:  
    • 2 years of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a surgical specialty, preferably plastic surgery, general surgery, or dermatology with surgical exposure.
    • Prior experience with specific plastic surgery procedures
    • Experience with pre-operative and post-operative patient management prior experience in performing minor surgical procedures (e.g., excisions, laceration repair, wound care).
    • Experience with patient education regarding surgical procedures, recovery, and potential complications.
Licenses and Registrations:
  • Required:
    • Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) OR Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in the state of Wisconsin at the time of hire.
    • Current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification OR National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner.

Certification(s):
  • Required: Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 3 months of hire
  • Preferred: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification desirable.
