Title: Registered Nurse - ER/Urgent Care
FTE: 0.9 FTE (72 hours per pay period)
Schedule: Varied 12-hour shifts, nights from 6:45pm - 7:15am
Weekends: 2 of 6 weekends
Holiday Rotation: Per Unit Guidelines
On Call Requirement: Per unit guidelines
POSITION SUMMARY
Emergency nurses provide rapid assessment and treatment to patients in the initial phase of illness or injury and often in life threatening situations. Time management is crucial in ascertaining allergies, medications, medical history, vitals, height and weight. Emergency nursing specializes in assessing, intervening and stabilizing a variety of injured and ill patients including neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric. Prioritization of patients, communication and critical thinking skills are necessary.
POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Triage patients using the Emergency Severity Index-ESI Triage Version 4, according to severity of illness and injury.
- Recognize need for assistance in treating patients and calls for help notifying provider when emergent situation arises.
- Respond to life-threatening situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
- Know and follow policy and procedures according to current Policy Tech Guidelines for treatment.
- Provide emergency care for variety of patients including but not limiting: Respiratory, Cardiac, Orthopedic, Neurological, Metabolic, EENT, Burns, Trauma, GI, Gynecological, Pregnancy, Renal, and Psychological conditions.
- Develop plan of care by assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation.
- Explain procedures and treatments to patient.
- Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
- Observe patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
- Initiate a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by physician and/or hospital policy including patient and family.
- Delegate duties to others as appropriate.
- Document care and actions taken in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with coworkers, physicians, patients and patients' family members.
- Float to other units as necessary.
- Participate in department or unit quality improvement activities.
- Attend 75% of Unit Meetings.
- May have precepting responsibility for another person.
- Protect patients' rights.
- Participate in continuing education through in-services and other programs.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Required: Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Experience
- Required: None
- Preferred: One or more years in Emergency Nursing.
Licenses and Registrations
- Required: Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse license
- Preferred: None
Certification(s):
- Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 3 months of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 6 months of hire. Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course (ENPC) required within 1 year of hire. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required within 1 year of hire.
- Preferred: Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
